Consultant
David is an experienced consultant and coach and has delivered a wide range of organisational change interventions, training and staff development programmes to senior teams and staff in government departments, healthcare and social care settings.
He specialises in leadership development with senior management teams and training front line mangers in supervision and management practice. David has a particular skill and experience in working with organisations that are experiencing great pressure and stress. He carries out organisational “health checks”, trouble-shoot with seemingly intractable human systems problems, designs interventions to overcome difficulties and produce complementary training workshops. He specialises in the ‘fit’ between people and structures in order to optimise the technical aspects of work and the relational aspects of the work group.
As part of his PhD research he has evaluated consultancy interventions and examined how to improve the outcome for the client. He is particularly interested in the impact that working with people in distress has on staff functioning and has conducted research on the effects of stress. He initially trained as a social worker and has experience of working in local authority settings, voluntary organisations and a psychiatric hospital as a field social worker and manager. He has worked in organisational and staff development posts in two local authorities and trained in organisational consultancy and psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic. He is qualified (through OPP) in Myers Briggs (MBTI) and is experienced in running leadership development programmes using this personality tool. Alongside his management and clinical work he has many years of teaching, lecturing, supervising and tutoring adults on a wide range of professional training courses at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and previously as a trainer and consultant within the local authority setting He has experience of working at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust as Head of the Social Work Discipline and member of the Senior Management Team.
